The finished product
In our last installment we removed the stock chrome-plated wheels from my 2008 Corvette, cleaned them up, taped them off and sprayed several coats of generic black Plasti Dip.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Now that we’ve got the black base layer down we’re going to use Plasti Dip metalizer in Bronze to bring in some shimmer and a little pop.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
We’re following the same mentality as the black, with smooth liquid coats that aren’t thick enough to run. After coat one things look a little uninspired.
One coat of metalizer
But the true test comes after 4 coats of metalizer, and some dry time. Rolling the wheels out into the sun produces a nice bronze finish that does have a ‘Metal’ quality to it.
Four coats of metalizer
Once Happy I let them dry and started peeling. For the wheels the tape came off no problem, no need to cut/etc to get it off. I had taped the valve stems, which actually came off very easily via unscrewing the cap a bit and then pulling the tape off. The center caps took the most work. You must cut the dip and then peel the tape to ensure it sticks. The caps did turn out fine after all that effort thankfully!
I opted to put the center caps back in the wheels, then put the wheels on the car, I don’t think order mattered. I also swapped out the stock chrome lugnuts for some black ones off eBay for $35.
And the finished product from a few angles:

Hopefully that shows some of the metalizer difference. I’ll try to post some sunny photos soon, but it’s raining again for a few days here.

There’s never a hose far from a freshly washed car. :)

I have it on good authority that if you have an abundance of tire shine on your tires you don’t really have to tape them off to dip.

I too have seen this. I also know that spray wax works well on other parts of the car for easy removal if you don’t want to mask.

Looks really good, glad you didn’t paint them black.

By far the best plastidipped wheels I’ve ever seen. Great work.

Nicely done! These look really good.
I’m wondering if adding a layer or two of Glossifier would add anything or if it would ruin the look?

They look great! Keep us posted on how they hold up.

Nice work! This is why I jump on people that say, “plastidip looks terrible” No, plastidip looks terrible when you leave the wheel on and don’t mask anything and give it 1 coat.

In my experience, it doesn’t do much. I did the wheels on our Jetta a couple years ago and they still turned out quite matte.

I’m going to be trying this out on the next set of wheels I do and report back. I’ve got 4 wheels on the DD so we’ll try 4 methods of not having to tape.

Thanks! I was tempted to try the glossifier honestly. Perhaps I’ll re-do these mid-summer and try it with glossifier.

Clay bar also makes short work of overspray

Yea I saw a few people leaving the wheels on the car, not masking etc. There are a ton of ways to not have to tape it (cards/release agent etc) but I can’t imagine doing this with the wheels on the car.

Yeah it’s terrible that way, you get runs and overspray tons of crap goes wrong.
My friend did the postcards around the edge and it worked nice

So very true!

I believe when I did mine I just wiped water around the side walls before each coat then wiped them off after each coat of spraying. Worked pretty well with minimum effort.

Once upon a time I was afraid dipping my wheels would look cheap or something. I did the same color as the OP and people love it. I love the stuff. Do it right and alllll is good.

Hey Chris, I’m thinking of also doing the wheels for my truck. Since this was posted almost a year ago, how does the plasti dip hold up now? Any signs of wear or peeling?

Understand that I put about 1000 miles on the car over the summer is all but that includes lots of car washing with pressure washers etc and no peeling/bubbling issues with it.
